PROJECT LOCATION
1515 South Van Ness is a 0.80 acre site that is located in the Mission District on South Van Ness between Cesar Chavez and 26th Street. The site falls within the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District, which is intended to preserve the prevailing neighborhood character of the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District, while accommodating new uses and recognizing the contributions of the Latino community to the neighborhood and the greater San Francisco.
The site is also adjacent to Casa Adelante - 1296 Shotwell, an affordable senior housing building also developed by MEDA and CCDC.

The site was previously owned and occupied by McMillan Electric Co. until 2015. In 2016, Lennar proposed a market-rate housing development at the site. In 2019, the City purchased the Site from market-rate developer Lennar, with the intent of developing new affordable housing. The former McMillan Electric Co. commercial building is now vacant with surface parking and small strip of landscaping.

INTERIM USE
A temporary "Safe Sleeping Village" (SSV) was established on-site in 2020 to provide 24/7 supportive services for unhoused individuals. The site was operated by Dolores Street Community Services and managed by the City's Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH). The SSV vacated the site in November 2023 and is now managed by the City and private security.

On November 30, 2020, MOHCD released a Multi-site Request for Qualifications (RFQ), seeking qualified developers to build affordable housing on various city-owned properties, which included 1515 South Van Ness as one of the Family Housing sites.
CCDC and MEDA partnered together and participated in the competitive, public selection process, and were selected in May 2021 to develop the site.
