Hello Neighbors,
Slowly but surely Casa Adelante – 1515 South Van Ness is working to go vertical starting with Level 2 soon. Level 1 will be home to a variety of key components, including the Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC), the Community Serving Non-Profit (CSNP), the Community Room and the Bike Room for our future residents, and other back-of-house components. Level 2 will be the residential entrance for our community right on the northwestern corner of South Van Ness Avenue and 26th Street.
Update for August 27th
Over the past couple of weeks, we have completed all the walls and columns on Level 1, including the shotcrete walls. We hope you have enjoyed watching the shotcrete application process with some photos shared below. We do not expect to use the shotcrete method of applying concrete on any more walls on this project.
Throughout the next couple of weeks, we will complete our installation of formwork for the Level 2 concrete deck. On the west half of the Level 2 deck, we will complete the installation of MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) in-slab sleeves, rebar and post-tension cables. The concrete for the Level 2 west deck is scheduled to be placed on Monday, September 8th. It will likely be an all-day pour but won’t be as intensive as our mat foundation pours back in July.
What are post-tension cables, or commonly referred to as PT cables? If you’ve ever walked past a building under construction and seen workers threading thick steel “cables” through concrete, you were likely looking at post-tension cables. These are high-strength steel tendons placed inside concrete before it fully hardens. Once the concrete sets, the cables are tightened (or “tensioned”) using special equipment.
This process puts the concrete into compression, which makes it much stronger and more flexible. Concrete by itself is excellent at handling heavy weight but weak when it comes to bending or stretching. PT cables help overcome that weakness, allowing builders to use less material, create longer spans without cracks, and design thinner, more elegant slabs.
