Construction Update #6 - August 15, 2025

Hello Neighbors,

After two eventful and successful Saturdays, we’re pleased to share that the full foundation mat slab for Casa Adelante – 1515 South Van Ness has been poured. Now the work begins to start constructing the columns and exterior walls as we begin the process of going vertical up from Level 0, our basement, to Level 1, our residential entrance, in the coming weeks.

Update for August 15th

Over the past two weeks, you may have noticed several concrete columns and a few of the shear walls on Level 1 have rebar installed, formwork installed, concrete poured, and formwork stripped. Over the next couple of weeks, this process will continue for the remaining shear walls on Level 1. In addition, many of the exterior Level 1 concrete walls will be placed by the shotcrete method of applying concrete, in which liquid concrete is sprayed upon the formed walls.

So, what are these components? Shear walls are strong, rigid walls built into the structure and are a key component of the building’s structural system as it helps resist lateral forces such as winds, earthquakes, or uneven settling. Formwork is temporary molds or frames that hold wet concrete in place until it hardens and gains enough strength to support itself. Think of formwork like a cake pan for concrete – it gives the concrete its shape until it’s solid.

Within the next few days, we will begin to install formwork for the Level 2 concrete deck, starting on the west and moving toward the east. All the concrete decks on this project have been designed with a post-tensioned cable system, or PT cables. The PT cables are strategically placed horizontally within the concrete from end to end, with excess cable extending beyond the edges of the concrete deck. Once the concrete is poured and cured to a certain strength, the PT cables are pulled at one end and capped off to tension them. This tension action provides additional strength to the concrete decks.
