September was another busy month at Casa Adelante1515 South Van Ness, with some big changes becoming visible both inside and outside the building. As more of the exterior is completed and scaffolding comes down, work is increasingly shifting toward the courtyard, interior finishes, and internal building systems.
A New Look Along Shotwell Street
Neighbors may have noticed a pretty dramatic change along Shotwell Street.
Scaffolding has come down along this side of the building, finally revealing the blue tile exterior that has been taking shape behind it.
Inside the Building
On the residential floors, crews are continuing with flooring, cabinetry, painting, and other finish work inside the future homes. The project team has also started floor-by-floor quality control and punch-list walks as completed areas move closer to the finish line.
Common areas are taking shape too, including new handrails along the Level 2 ramps leading to the residential units. Inside the future homes, flooring, cabinetry, painting, and other finishes are moving ahead throughout the residential floors.
Courtyard Taking Shape
Outside, one of the biggest areas of activity is now the interior courtyard. With scaffolding removed from much of the surrounding building, crews are moving ahead with waterproofing, ground-level work, and preparation for the future landscaping.

Work at the ground level is preparing the courtyard for future landscaping, seating, and play areas.
Water Service Work Along South Van Ness
Neighbors will also see activity continuing outside the building along South Van Ness Avenue. Crews began excavation at the end of September to complete work associated with the building’s water service.
Because this work takes place in the street, there may be temporary parking and traffic impacts while crews complete the excavation and connection.
We’ll continue coordinating closely with the City and our construction team as this work moves ahead.
Mural Taking Shape
We’re also excited to share that the first of two murals planned for Casa Adelante is nearly complete!
This mural faces toward Bernal Heights and runs parallel to Cesar Chavez Street. The artists are wrapping up their final work, with the scaffolding expected to come down around mid-October and reveal the completed piece to the neighborhood.
And there’s more public art to come.
Work on the building’s second mural is expected to begin in November. That piece will be located on the opposite side of the building, running parallel to 26th Street near the South Van Ness corner.
Looking Ahead to October
As we head into October, the project is entering another important phase. Interior punch-list walks will continue floor by floor, building systems will move through commissioning and life-safety testing, and work will continue throughout the courtyard and remaining exterior areas.
The team is also working toward having the building “dried in” by the end of October, meaning the roof, storefronts, windows, and other exterior openings will be substantially sealed from the weather.
There is still plenty happening throughout the building, but we are getting closer to the point where the focus shifts from major construction to interior finishes, testing and preparing the building for its future residents.
